Located in the heart of South Carolina, Lexington is a small town known for its southern charm and hospitality. In the past few years, the town’s population increased by 10 percent. This makes Lexington one of the fastest growing cities in the nation. Although business is booming in Lexington, the community hasn’t lost its caring, family-friendly atmosphere and historic appeal.

The Rich History of Lexington

Present-day Lexington was established in the former area of Saxe Gotha, a provincial township founded by King George II in the early 1700s. This settlement was located near the intersection of two important Indian trade routes that served as a guide for the placement of modern highways and interstates. The strategic location was intended to protect profitable plantations in the state’s low country and piedmont areas from invading Indians. In spite of setbacks related to the American Revolution and the Civil War, Lexington prospered.

The town earned its current name in the late 1700s and was officially incorporated in 1861. By that time, Lexington was a vibrant community surrounded by agricultural areas that produced lumber, corn, sweet potatoes, cotton and trade crops. In town, tradesmen, lawyers, doctors and artisans helped build the economic base that led to the establishment of churches, schools, factories, mills and a weekly newspaper. More than 20 businesses and private estates from this era are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Life in Lexington

Lexington’s entrepreneurial spirit continues to drive the city’s growth in the 21st century. The town has many independent businesses, including startups and institutions that have been centerpieces of the community for more than half a century. The downtown area is home to a host of boutiques featuring eclectic clothing, jewelry and handcrafted items. Lexington is a foodie’s paradise. There are fine Italian cafes, Asian and fusion restaurants, southern eateries and culinary landmarks like Groucho’s Deli.

As evidenced by the Lexington Farmers Market, the community’s fertile roots are alive and well. This weekly event features produce and locally made items from farmers and crafters. Of course, the attractions of the big city are never far. Lexington is just 12 miles from Columbia and 20 minutes from the University of South Carolina campus. College football, and outdoor activities at Lake Murray are all popular during South Carolina’s long summers and throughout the year.
